Join UCLA English for a talk featuring Carmen E. Lamas, Associate Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Virginia. The Spanish-language textbook is a much overlooked and even maligned nineteenth-century genre, yet it is of upmost importance for understanding US American literature in the nineteenth century. Composed mainly by Latina/o authors these textbooks are not monomodal pedagogical devices: they are integral to US American literary history, and their Latina/o origins and legacies can be traced to the present day.
