Nineteenth-Century Spanish-Language Textbooks and US American Literature

Join UCLA English for a talk featuring Carmen E. Lamas, Associate Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Virginia. The Spanish-language textbook is a much overlooked and even maligned nineteenth-century genre, yet it is of upmost importance for understanding US American literature in the nineteenth century. Composed mainly by Latina/o authors these textbooks are not monomodal pedagogical devices: they are integral to US American literary history, and their Latina/o origins and legacies can be traced to the present day. The talk will be followed by a Q & A moderated by Marissa López, Professor of English and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA.

Carmen E. Lamas is an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Virginia. Her book The Latino Continuum and the Nineteenth-Century Americas: Literature, Translation, and Historiography (Oxford 2021) explores nineteenth-century Latina/o history, literature, and translation from a hemispheric perspective. Her second book Irene Albar. Novela cubana (1885, 1886) por Eusebio Guiteras. Edición facsímil was published this Spring 2023 by Editorial Calambur (Valencia, Spain) and examines the trans-American and trans-Atlantic nature of nineteenth-century Latina/o lives and texts.
