Text Analysis Research Cluster December Meeting: Early Modern Women in Ottoman-Algeria

Dec 12, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Scholarly Innovation Lab, Charles E. Young Research Library + Google Map

Text Analysis Research Cluster (TARC) will host Ashley Sanders-Garcia for a talk. Here’s a description of her talk:

Algerian women were essential intercultural mediators and conduits to power in the Ottoman-Algerian world between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, but they were often overlooked by historians because they are not the primary subject of colonial archives. Because they are mentioned indirectly or in relation to male figures in the sources, network analysis of the individuals mentioned in these texts allows us to discover the stories of both named and unnamed women. This talk will describe how “Early Modern Women in Ottoman-Algeria” employs user-friendly tools, including Recogito, Gephi, and Tableau to recover the experience of marginalized peoples through text mining and network analysis.
