Jennie Brand
Professor of Sociology and Statistics, UCLA
Jennie E. Brand is Professor of Sociology and Statistics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is Director of the California Center for Population Research (CCPR) and Co-Director of the Center for Social Statistics (CSS) at UCLA. She received her PhD in Sociology in 2004 and was previously a Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholar at the University of Michigan and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Public Policy and a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Carolina Population Center at UNC, Chapel Hill. She joined the faculty at UCLA in 2007. She is Chair of the Methodology Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), Chair-Elect of the Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility Section of ASA, and an elected Board Member of the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee on Social Stratification and Mobility (RC28). She was elected to the Sociological Research Association (SRA), an honor society for excellence in research, in 2019, and received the ASA Methodology Leo Goodman Mid-Career Award in 2016. Prof. Brand is a member of the Technical Review Committee for the National Longitudinal Surveys Program at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. She was previously a member of the Board of Overseers of the General Social Survey (GSS). She is Associate Editor of AAAS’s Science Advances, the open access extension of Science magazine, and serves on the editorial boards of many other leading journals. Prof. Brand studies social stratification and inequality, mobility, social demography, education, and methods for causal inference. She teaches Sociology of Education and Social Data Science at the undergraduate level and Social Stratification, Inequality and Mobility and Quantitative Methods at the graduate level. She is the Principal Investigator for the Social Inequality Data Science (SIDS) Lab, serves on the Social Sciences Division Data Science and Public Policy Working Group, and is the Faculty Organizer of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science. Prof. Brand spearheaded with Mark Handcock the Social Data Science minor at UCLA.
