About the Speakers

Kazem Alamdari received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, his MA in Educational Administration from Illinois State University, and his BS from the University of Tehran in Psychology. He has taught at various universities, including UCLA, CSULA, and CSUN. Alamdari has published ten books and numerous articles in English and Persian, with the most recent being Civil Society: Theories, Contexts, and Experiences, 2015. Alamdari was the recipient of a fellowship from the Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) in Japan, Kyushu University in 1997. As a public intellectual, he is frequently featured in the media and presents lectures at national and international conferences in different parts of the world.

 

 

 

Mehrzad Boroujerdi is Vice Provost and Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Previously he was Professor of Government and International Affairs and Director of the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech, and before that Professor of Political Science at Syracuse University. His most recent book is Post-revolutionary Iran: A Political Handbook (2018). He has been President of the Association for Iranian Studies, a fellow of the American Council on Education, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, a visiting scholar at UCLA, a non-resident scholar at the Middle East Institute, and a co-PI of Iran Data Portal. He is frequently consulted by both government entities and media outlets as Al Jazeera, Associated Press, Economist, Guardian, LA Times, NPR, New York Times, Reuters, Spiegel, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. He earned his Ph.D. in international relations from The American University.

 

 

 

Touraj Atabaki is Senior Research Fellow at the International Institute of Social History and Professor Emeritus of Social History of the Middle East and Central Asia at Leiden University. Atabaki studied theoretical physics and later history at the University of London and Utrecht University. Following positions at Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam, he joined Leiden University where he held the Chair of Social History of the Middle East and Central Asia. Atabaki’s research encompasses historiography, social history of labor and subaltern studies in 20th century Iran, the Ottoman empire, and Turkey, as well as the Caucasus and Central Asia. His forthcoming publications with Cambridge University Press are: Social History of the Iranian Oil Industry and Fallen in the Whirlwind: Life and Time of Iranian Migrant Labour and Political Activists during the Soviet Great Purge.
