Since the beginning of the Islamic revolution, Iranian women have been the focus of the Islamization of public spaces. However, this form of Islamization did not occur as expected by clerics who used many methods to frame and limit women in private and public spaces. Iranian women who experienced some social and individual freedoms during the Shah’s time, after the revolution, used different social and individual strategies to maintain their presence in public spaces and public spheres. Over time and over generations, they have invented new strategies and thus have become important social actors. In this lecture, some of these strategies that women have used over the past 4 decades to maintain their active presence in public space and public spheres will be discussed.
