Please join us on Thursday, May 9, at 7:30 pm in the fabulous Darren Star Screening Room (Melnitz 1422) for a special, one-night screening of Spanish director Jaime Chavarri’s 1976 cult documentary, El desencanto (The Disenchantment)! The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Center for European and Russian Studies, and the Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media.

Aaron Shulman, author of the new bookThe Age of Disenchantments: The Epic Story of Spain’s Most Notorious Literary Family and the Long Shadow of the Spanish Civil War (Ecco/Harper Collins, 2019), will introduce the film and join us for a post-screening discussion. A reception with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will round out the event.

Seats are limited, so do be sure to mark it in your calendars and arrive early.

Check out the trailer for El desencanto here

While you’re at it, have a look at Shulman’s 2015 essay on the film in The Believer.

Here’s a recent mention of the film in the New York Times.

And here’s a New York Times review of Aaron Shulman’s book.
