Jeffrey Masten has written influentially on the importance of sexuality-studies methods for reading early modern literature and culture. His books include Textual Intercourse: Collaboration, Authorship, and Sexualities in Renaissance Drama (Cambridge, 1997) and Queer Philologies: Sex, Language, and Affect in Shakespeare’s Time (Penn, 2016, forthcoming in paperback), and his articles include writing about textual editing, attribution methods, book history, and early women’s writing. His forthcoming edition of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II for Arden Early Modern Drama includes new research on heresy, sodomy, and a previously unknown copy of the play’s 1594 first edition.
Masten is Professor of English and Gender and Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University, with degrees from Denison University and the University of Pennsylvania. At Northwestern, Masten has been named Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence, the university’s highest teaching award, and has directed the Gender and Sexuality Studies program.
