UCLA faculty members Judith Carney and Stephanie Jamison have been selected as members of the 237th class of American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellows.
Jamison, a professor of Asian languages and cultures, also teaches courses in UCLA’s Indo-European studies program. She was trained as a historical and Indo-European linguist, and for many years she has concentrated on Indo-Iranian, especially Vedic Sanskrit and Middle Indo-Aryan languages. She works on language and linguistics, literature and poetics, religion and law, mythology and ritual, and gender studies in these languages. Her most recent major publication is a three-volume translation (with Joel P. Brereton) of the Rig Veda, the oldest Sanskrit text.
Carney and Jamison’s fellow inductees this year include singer-songwriter John Legend, actress Carol Burnett, Xerox chairman Ursula Burns, mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The fellows will be inducted at a ceremony on October 7 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
