North campus major interested in tech? Come meet a panel of experts who use their B.A. in tech-related ways.

Humanities and social science majors are often told that their field is impractical and won’t lead to a successful–or lucrative–career. But that’s not true! Come meet our panel of experts–all UCLA alumni–who’ve learned how to use their north campus degrees to land jobs in the tech industry.

Corinne Crockett
UCLA ’10, Communication
Head of Marketing, Vow to be Chic

Corinne Crockett is a startup veteran, and currently the Head of Marketing at Vow To Be Chic. She’s worked for various LA tech companies, from startup incubators to corporate digital giants to high-growth startups, including BeachMint, Match.com, and Thrive Market. Corinne joined the Vow To Be Chic executive team as their Head of Marketing, running Brand, User Acquisition, and Retention. As a UCLA alum, she’s invested in growing and strengthening the Silicon Beach community, particularly for Bruins!

 

Angie Howard
UCLA ’17, Linguistics
Computational Linguist, SoundHound Inc.

Angie Howard is a Computational Linguist at SoundHound and a Computational Linguistics masters student at San José State University. She has a B.A. in Linguistics and a minor in German from UCLA. During her undergraduate career she studied abroad in Ghana and Barbados where she did field work with pidgins and creoles. Now at SoundHound she works on multiple components of automatic speech recognition, such as text-to-phoneme algorithms and acoustic models.

 

Ryan Krebs
UCLA ’12, Political Science
Account Manager, Google Cloud Platform

After graduating from UCLA, Ryan went from working in LA’s Silicon Beach to moving to San Francisco in 2014, joining Optimizely and later Google Cloud Platform as the first Inside Sales hire. On the side, he served as a panelist on “Larry King Now”, lived in a 60 person co-op and co-leads a blockchain focused newsletter, thepublickey.io.

 

Alex Ross
UCLA ’12, Chinese
Director of Engineering, Tinder

Alex Ross is a Director of Engineering at Tinder. Currently he leads engineering teams working on diverse challenges, from developing new location-based features to fighting spam and abuse on the platform. Before Tinder he was a co-founder, CTO, and later COO of Enplug, Inc., a Los Angeles-based enterprise software company with over 500 customers including Google, GE, and Marriott, and was featured in Inc. Magazine’s 30 under 30. Alex studied Chinese Language and Culture at UCLA.

 
Jaime Balboa [Moderator]
Assistant Vice Provost, Undergrad. Edu.
Senior Venture Consultant, Startup UCLA

Jaime Balboa is Assistant Vice Provost in Undergraduate Education and Senior Venture Consultant at Startup UCLA. An administrator at UCLA since 2005, his portfolio includes Summer Sessions, the International Education Office, and Startup UCLA. Jaime serves on the Board for Biotech Connection Los Angeles and is an open water swimmer who trains with the UCLA Bruin Masters Swim Team.
