This application is for graduate students applying as Fellows to the following Winter/Spring Quarter 2018 Seminars in Teaching Excellence (STE): Language Expertise and Course Design and Assessment TechniquesThe application for Fall 2017 has closed. This application is due on or before Friday, October 20, 2017.

Each candidate must fulfill the following criteria in order to be eligible to apply to the Mellon-EPIC Fellowship in Teaching Excellence:

  • Candidate’s home department must be part of the Humanities Division or the Department of History at UCLA. For a list of Humanities departments please see: http://humanities.ucla.edu/academics/departments/
  • Candidate must be enrolled full-time during the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • Candidate must have at least one full quarter of TA experience at UCLA prior to the quarter when the STE is offered.
  • Candidate must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Candidate must arrange for a UCLA faculty member to send an email referral on his/her behalf. The referral must be sent by the faculty member directly to epic@humnet.ucla.edu and it must speak to the candidate’s commitment to excellence in teaching in the humanities and/or advocacy of TA training at UCLA. Please advise your faculty recommender to submit a .pdf file. The faculty referral is also due on Friday, October 20, 2017.
  • The ideal Fellow will be between years two and five of their Ph.D. study, however compelling candidates that do not satisfy this criterion will also be considered.

 

  • 1. What are your primary reasons for participating in the STE? 2. What do you hope to gain or learn during the quarter-long STE? 3. Briefly describe the opportunities for TA training available to you via your department and/or at UCLA. 4. Describe a recent example of a challenge in the classroom or course development and the steps you took to resolve this challenge. Please be a specific as possible. 5. What do you think are the biggest pedagogical challenges that face humanities instructors today? List two to three examples. 6. What does your Ph.D. training in the humanities include to better prepare you for the academic and/or non-academic job market? List two to three examples. 7. Are there lapsed incompletes in your transcript? If so, please provide an explanation for each lapsed grade and the approximate date when you expect the lapses will be resolved.

    Cover Letter: Please upload a cover letter addressing your commitment to sustained pedagogical training for instructors at UCLA. Please include your participation in research, professional development, and other activities relating to improving teaching amongst faculty and/or TAs.
